VietlishTV – Episode 7: In the USA with Toc Tien (Toc May)

Written by Joseph Hieu Dinh & Maria Tran.
Translation: Joseph Hieu Dinh

Right here with Fairy Hair - Interview with Toc Tien

Written by Joseph Hieu Dinh & Maria Tran.

Shes only 20 years of age and having emerged as child actress, singer, performer, TV presenter and model. She is now a household recognisable name and face of the Vietnam entertainment industry. Her name is Toc Tien or directly translated as fairy hair, but since early February this year, Tien had made the bold transition to California, US to complete her university studies of a Bachelor of Science. So far, her journey has been a rocky, lonely and a highly scheduled one, having been the target of online forums for her controversial appearance with the current Vietnam flag, and facing back to back commitments of her work for Thuy Nga and her study load.

But beyond all this, Tien reveals herself as a happy go lucky, non pretentious girl who is fun and focused and knows how to deliver a charismatic laugh.
Vietlish Team Joseph Hieu Dinh and Maria Tran had the privilege of meeting this established youth star at the back of the local Thuy Nga store after being rejected at meeting space at Lee Sandwiches just a couple metres down the road.
Maria Tran's limited Vietnamesey skills had put her as background as Joseph Hieu Dinh flaunted his diasporic Vietnamese skills to communicate to the lovely and funky interview highlight of his week.

Further discoveries indicates her mainstream Vietnam influence over a wide range of notable worldwide brands such as Pepsi, Biore and immobile.

What is much more interesting about Toc Tien is she isnt afraid to be herself. It surely is evident on her Facebook site when she makes visible her daily schooling life; nerdy glasses, fuzzy hair and cheesy grins and for that same reason she is possibly the next generation of youth celebrities who know how to be down to earth and keeping it real.

Internet II: Alternative Media guest lecture at Australian National University

Joseph Hieu (JH) & Maria Tran (Emtee) had an early burly road trip to Canberra for our first ever Vietlish lecture. We’ve done books launch, stamp launch, feature film launch, radio launch, weddings, funerals, protests, commorations, tennis awards, national concerts and now we hit the Australian National University with special thanks to Dr Ashley Carruthers.

Its funny that it was only a year ago that the adventures of two Australian-Vietnamese buddies decided to “go against the grain” and activate their minds and “voices” in as many realms of life.

With a small intimate crowd of 50 studying academics at one of the world’s prestigious universities, JH & Emtee tag teamed it out to deliver some of their introspection of their beloved community and showcasing both “Vietnamese Stories” & “Vietnamese Storycubes” – an Australian, and most likely world first intergenerational projects.

Joseph Hieu (JH) informatively highlights some of the Vietnamese media landscape: both in mainland Vietnam and the Vietnamese diaspora. With particular references to recent controversies such as the Don Ho communist entertainment star (double meaning to these words written so please read again) and also the outline of the main media honchos and the effects of government controlled vs non government controlled media. He also took an extra step to highlight the diasporic sensitivities and symbolic taboos that are still prominent; almost 35 years since the aftermath.

Maria Tran (Emtee) focus of the lecture were all things “digital” and showcased 3 mini-films made by her students Ook, Huyen & Vinh from the “Vietnamese Stories” program. She also retold the Vietlish journey and what this accidental formation and its effects that has “narrowcasted” itself on a global scale.
In addition, Maria showed the Vietlish episode featuring “Don Ho” and the gungho approach in interviewing and braving out the silly questions that has been received as a refreshing approach.

She was honest to point out Vietlish’s haphazard beginnings and online and social networking experiments that put them on the radars of Vietnamese media landscape worldwide.

“Yup, we are gungho & guerrilla!” confirms Maria.

“But at the same time, still focus on the bigger picture, that is all the Vietnamesey people worldwide” adds Joseph.

A shout out to Shaun Cheng who took some work time out to come check us out. Big apologies that we couldn’t stay back to have lunch which he so kindly insisted on ANU’s famous chicken burgers.

Nevertheless, we left on a good note with the promise to meet and again. Shaun suggested that we drop in on The Bakery of Goulburn – thanks for the advice – we did.

JH & MT Comments on Tết

Joseph Hieu & Maria Tran - Social Media Personalities

Vietlish Entertainment

“Tet for us is a time for us to be proud of our cultural heritage. It is a time to share with our families and to be with them. As a child, I [Joseph] remember my dad making ‘banh chung’ cakes (now I can make them myself !), giving the elders all the best wishes and receiving lì-xì from them.. and now, being more involved with the community, it gets us even more interested in embracing the festivity of Tết.”

“For the Year of the Ox 2009, we wish everyone a safe and wonderful year, filled surprises, good health and propserity. See you at the Hoi Cho Tet Entertainment on Friday 6 February 2008 at Fairfield Showgrounds. Entertainment starts 8-11pm and features special guest – Paris By Night superstar Don Ho !”
