BLOG: Thuy Ng journey of MC2 from Sydney to Newcastle!!!

Once I see a really awesome trailer, I go on a quest to see the movie. So once I saw the trailer for Maximum Choppage Round 2, I went on the search to try and see a film that wasn’t in the mainstream. I finally got my chance in 2010 at the Australian Film Festival. The only problem was that it was in Coogee and I lived in the western suburbs and I also had a uni class on at the same time. That didn’t stop me though.

MC2 is a well made film of its calibre, the action sequences were intricate and fast paced with awesome sounds effects. Mixed with comedy that made me laugh out loud it is an action/comedy film that is a breath of fresh air from the mainstream Hollywood action films, which have not been faring well lately.

MC2 just recently aired at The Loft in Newcastle. A 2 and half trip from Sydney. Did that stop me? Nope not even the fact that I would be stuck in a car for almost 6 hours with Maria Tran (Shoot I’m almost out of petrol! – On the freeway mind you) and Chop Ok (Is Newcastle in Sydney? –honestly!). It’s nice to see that the film is traveling around and spreading the magic, encouraging guerrilla film making between awesome and passionate friends possibly nurturing the next generation of film makers especially in an area such as Newcastle where there is obviously talent but a lack of outlets to express this.

I hope that MC2 will be the pioneer in the crusade to get more awesome Australian films made and into the mainstream.

EVENT: Maximum Choppage: Round 2 Screening in Newcastle!

After a 2 and a half hour drive north of Sydney, I arrived at Newcastle with my fellow interns/protege film student Thuy Ng and tourism student Ok Chop. Its been a while since Rumble Pictures had a Maximum Choppage: Round 2 screening and this time, I was contacted by Adam Clough via You Tube to see if an event like this could happen.

Adam has always been a action film buff and have been keeping tabs on film movements over the course of his life so when he heard about "Maximum Choppage: Round 2", a film that holds the title for Australia's Urban Action Martial Arts adventure, Clough quickly took that chance to grapple an opportunity for a screening and an opportunity to inspire other young hopefuls in to areas of film.
Newscastle is much more scenic than the hustle and bustle of Sydney. It is the second most populated city in the state of New South Wales, Australia and is the largest coal exporting harbour in the world.

Back to the screening, with a intimate group of viewers, Maximum Choppage: Round 2 is able to be played once again on the big screen. Unfortunately Timothy Ly wasn't able to make it, but his youth, spirit, innovation can be felt throughout the film. I must admit, the film itself is a good piece of collaborative dynamo and I'm glad to be involved in such a fine piece of work that hasn't lost its appeal to inspire others.

Here's some snappies of the event.
Shout out to Adam Clough for coordinating the screening and my lovely intern/ protege Thuy and Ok for accompanying me to the event and bearing with my shoddy manual driving skills.

SCREENING: Maximum Choppage: Round 2 in Newcastle!

Yay! Maximum Choppage: Round 2 is hitting 2.5 hours north of Sydney at a place called Newcastle! The coordinator is Adam Clough from The Octopod Association - a media arts organisation based out this region. Its definitely exciting times once again! The last time I recall a last request for a screening was in 2009 in Hollywood, LA for another independent film cinema. It does thrill me when the film resonates with communities and other creatives. If you are in Newcastle, do check it out!

KICK ARSE KUNG FU & GUERILLA MAYHEM HITS NEWCASTLE!

MAXIMUM CHOPPAGE: ROUND 2

Maximum Choppage: Round 2; Australia’s first urban kung fu action adventure is finally in Newcastle!

Made by an artist collective called Rumble Pictures based in Cabramatta in Sydney’s West – Maximum Choppage: Round 2 is their offering to the recent explosion in popularity for Kung Fu Films.

One of the makers of this epic no-budget, first-time youth movie, producer/ actress Maria Tran will be traveling with it.

“We definitely want to get feedback from this creative city and meet up with Newcastle movie makers and emerging artists” comments Maria Tran.

Not since the cult 1975 film The Man From Hong Kong has Australia produced its own Kung Fu picture. Tired of the solid foreign diet, Rumble Pictures decided to produce their own tribute to the martial arts movies of the 70’s and 80’s using their local urban streets as the back drop.

Offering a reinvention of the Kung Fu genre but taking direct inspiration from the classic 70 and 80s narratives of Jackie Chan, Rumble Pictures are proud to present Australia’s first “no-budget, but epic ambition” action Kung Fu film.

"It's an awesome example of what anyone can achieve independently from the traditional routes of movie making." remarks former Shootout judge and Newcastle Grind co-ordinator Adam Clough. "Anybody at a grass roots level with a camera and a computer is able to create and show their movies."

Maximum Choppage: Round 2 is a 70 minute urban action adventure exploring the great story telling corner stones of love and pride. Two arch rivals fight with swords over a girl in down town battle! Within a story line dedicated to accommodate as many kick ass kung fu show downs as possible, the result is fast, furious and funny.

The producers, Rumble Pictures, have ensured that the fundamental essence of Kung-Fu action is not lost nor compromised in their ploy to pay such homage. What results is a preservation of the slapstick fun and comedic notions of the earlier work of Jackie Chan highlighted with the animated cues of Steven Chow’s Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle.

Writer and Director Craig Anderson from the ABC’s Double the Fist noted MC2’s presence as an innovative montage of action and comedy. “Here’s a truly funny film that acknowledges its roots. An old school Kung Fu film in its purity!” he says.

Maximum Choppage: Round 2 is an independent picture four years in the making. It makes no apologies for its ‘rough around-the-edges’ approach to cinematography that pushes the boundaries of guerilla-style moviemaking – action sequences at its most organic. In the project’s initial stages when resources were limited, camera dollies were replaced by skate boards and home mattresses dragged into the street to use as crash pads as people dove off council bins!

Adam goes on to add "The Australia we see in the media is often far removed from the reality of the outer suburbs of capital cities or places like Newcastle, whose culture in arts, music, and even movies is distinct in it's own way. Newcastle's exported a lot of independent arts & music over the years, but not a lot of movies. So I hope Maximum Choppage & Rumble Pictures encourages young people to have fun and make movies that celebrate the things they do rather than trying to fill the mold film culture's wanted us to fit into to be accepted."

To be held at Newcastle's The Loft Youth Venue, Rumble Pictures & Newcastle Grind invites punters, punks, geeks, enthusiasts, and emerging artists (martial and non-martial alike) to be part of the awesomeness.

BRUCE Lee fans know there is only one way to see the man in action in the cinema.

But some of the biggest Lee fans around - the team behind Cabramatta's Rumble Pictures - have only ever viewed the martial arts legend on DVD.

Tonight, Lee's Enter the Dragon appears on the big screen, and the young film-makers fulfil their ambition of watching the genre-defining kung-fu flick as it was intended.

"I've seen it a fair few times on DVD and video" said Timothy Ly, writer and star of Rumble Picture's Maximum Choppage 2, the first feature-length kung-fu film made in Australia since George Lazenby took on The Man from Hong Kong in 1975.

Mr Ly saw his first Bruce Lee film at the age of eight.
"He's definitelyone of my major influences." he said.

Maria Tran, who also starred in Maximum Choppage 2 agreed.

"This is going to be quite a different experience" she said.

The pair both practice the art of kung-fu Shaolin monk-style.
