SOPHEA MOELN: Inspirations of One Bold Daring Woman

This a confession that I'm really have a background in nerdology in the past schooling years of mine, having been the target for bullies in high school when where I would sport a long pass my knees pleated, Fringe cut hairstyle, braces and oversized oval gold rimmed glasses.

I was the nerd - the know it all nerd, who got rejected by the Spice Girls group, would get bashed by the sporty bullies and left for dead on the handball courts to fight for "Queens" in every match.

These days were my TOMBOY days, hanging with the boys and even today, traces of this "classification" is still within and now, after meeting Sophea, has been reinvigorated and transformed into something a little bit surprising.

Meet Sophea Moeln, ex-Tomboy who use to hang with the Tongans and Aboriginals, an outlier growing up in Western Sydney.

Now, with her determination of going against the grain, she has pushed the boundaries and gone to places where she has never been before.

Having two kids, it didn't deter her from pursuing her modelling career and in the field of swim suit and lingerie, a field that has quite often elicited many negative remarks from the Asian community.

She is no Tila Tequila, but a passionate and sensitive individual, who may be brash and upfront on what she wants, but overall, is very considerate of other people's well being. Being a giver and less of a taker, she breaks the stereotypes of egocentric "Me! me! me!" kinds of models and people who think that the world revolves around themself.

So here is my stamp of approval for this lovely lady and thank you for our guidance and boundary pushing for 2010.

RECAP ON: Action Photography Shoot
Photographer: Thierry Cuu Nguyen (Main), Vincent Nguyen, Sid Nou (Secondary)

It was a full day shoot at the Mr Ponds Gardens located in Horsley Park, Western Sydney and it was my first one with Ms Sophea. She was quick to show me the ropes and encouragements when I was unsure of myself.

Thierry Cuu Nguyen (Nomad Photography) was a great person with a light hearted sense of humour and of course, lots and lots of patience with my awkward looking poses. I have to admit, his demo ones definitely beat mine. Some of his shots are below:

Sid Nou is an aspiring photographer who eagerly sported his gear out and had fun shooting the prelims. Here are his shot below:

Shout out to the young and dangerous boys and of  course Mr Pond for lending his lovely Tweety bird lotus.

PHOTOGRAPHY: Action Photoshoot with Sophea Moeln

Date: Saturday, 27th of Feburary, 2010
Location: 67 Cobwall Rd, Horsley Park.

Modelling is perhaps, one of my 2010 challenges to date, something that usually belongs in my parallel lives but have somehow crossed over through 28 year old, Cambodian-Australian freelance model - Sophea Moeln

This woman knows her stuff when it comes to being 'sexy'. She's done countless bikini shots and other shoots that acquire very little attire.

Sassy, bold and talented, Ms Moeln is so sure that, under her wing, she will transform me from dag to confident model babe, a notion that still is hard for me to comprehend as I simply think of myself as more "academic" and conservative in dress code.
But "what if" is always a question to tickle the senses and if she can do this, I guess I can also achieve my own dream "Quest for Jackie Chan!".

*R - Ms Sophea Moeln

A recap of the day: A long shoot from 10-5pm with the likes of Gary Quay and Andy Minh Trieu as our budding gangster ghetto homies sporting broadswords, straight swords, and all things sharp and illegal if legit. And for the girls, we had to play it up with the theme of school girls riding a Lotus, fighter chicky babes and Asian girl militant.

Oh boy! Did I had fun! Even though it proved to be quite difficult to remain confident all times and sure of myself, I still flaunted that mini mini pleated schoolie shirt and sprawled myself on the yellow eye catching sportscar Lotus and attempt to captivate the lenses.

We probably ended up with over 100 shots, all of which Thierry Nguyen  at Nomad Photography will have to edit and facebook in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, I'd like to send a special thanks to Mr Pond, a close friend of Sophea Moeln who lent the set in-kind.

MEDIA: They’re After a Hero

BY JENNY HUA
24 Feb, 2010 03:07 PM
WE'VE watched him kick villains' butts and we've laughed at his singing in Rush Hour, but how does an Asian girl from Sydney's south-west meet Jackie Chan?

Since Maria Tran came up with a documentary idea six months ago, she's been working hard to get it up and running by creating a Twitter campaign and a Facebook page and by uploading videos on YouTube.

Quest for Jackie! will be a reality documentary presenting messages from Jackie Chan fans across Australia.

Ms Tran hopes to spend a month filming and wants to fly to Hong Kong in August to meet Jackie Chan, who is a martial arts legend.

``Jackie Chan has got to have one of the most recognisable faces in the world,'' Ms Tran said.

``He's inspiring. He has made more than 100 films and broken 200 bones and is still making movies. Young people, particularly those in the west, see him as a multicultural icon.''

Ms Tran has been consulting several people for support.

She has interviewed people who have met Jackie Chan.

``The goal is to collect mail, personal messages or video clips from people who want to send a message to Jackie Chan,'' she said.

Although the final goal is to meet her idol, Ms Tran said the documentary was also about encouraging social change of ethnic representations in the media.

``He's still an outcast in Hollywood,'' she said.

``He plays characters who can't speak English properly.

``We want to push forward and empower culturally diverse people to tell their stories and to get mainstream representation.''

<> Ms Tran has coped with several rejections and people who say her project is ``over the top''.

She won't be giving up and she also has a back-up plan ready.

``People say I'm obsessed, but I call it passion,'' she said.

``Anything is possible.''

BLOG: Jackie Chan’s Little Big Soldier @ Event Cinemas

Little Big Soldier starring Jackie Chan & Lee-Hom Wang
Saturday, February 20, 20109:30PM, Macquarie Centre Event Cinemas

The Q4JC crew (Maria Tran, Andy Minh Trieu, Steve Ada, along with Shaun Chang) headed off to Macquarie Park to watch Jackie Chan’s feature “Little Big Soldier” at Event Cinemas, Macquarie Centre. Known as one of the few cinemas to screen Asian Cinema, Macquarie Centre’s Event Cinemas is one of the largest complexes in Sydney.

From Maria Tran:
“One is an old soldier who only wants to survive. The other is a young general who is aspiring to conquer. After a bloody battle, the two are the only ones alive. When the soldier finds the injured general, he decides to kidnap him and brings him on a long journey to collect a reward, thinking by doing so he will no longer need to fight a war.

The general, feeling insulted, attempts suicide but is saved by the soldier every time.Somewhere along the way, the soldier and the general find themselves becoming allies in a fight against the real villains. The story of “Little Big Soldier” is mapped out by Jackie Chan who had conceived it for 20 years.

Chan told Sohu.com in an interview that he has talked about the story with many people. But director Ding Sheng was the only one who has translated the colloquial story into a screenplay.
Ding Sheng also directs the comedic road film, starring Jackie Chan as the soldier and Lee-Hom Wang as the general. Jackie Chan, who supervises the production, says the film is about lives during wartime and is a strong message that peace is priceless.”

My (Marie Setiawan) thoughts on the film: I grew up watching Jackie Chan films, and this one didn’t disappoint. Famous for his action choreography mixed with comic relief, Jackie Chan delivered. The film was entertaining, but not stagnant that it would slow its pace. It wasn’t as punchy as his Hollywood counterparts, such as Rush Hour or Shanghai Noon, but it brought back the roots of Asian cinema again. It brought me back to the films I adored and loved as a kid. But what I really admired was the underlying message that was coming across through the entertainment. I agree that Jackie had successfully pulled it off and it came across so powerfully in the end.

Overall, what do I say about the film? It’s MARVELOUS!

ASPIRING PEOPLE: Photographer Brent Mc Donald

In this article we I interview 21 year old, Canberra based photographer and digital artist who has just completed his Advanced Diploma in 3D Animation for film.
This kid has got to be one of Australia’s future top photographers who just oozes talent as he captures an array of emotions through his visually stunning and strikingly innovative works.

INTERVIEW WITH BRENT
Are you a self taught photographer or did you have a mentor that showed you the ropes?I am mostly self taught. I’ve learnt most of what I know via trial and error. Most of the “technical” stuff I’ve learnt was based online with via the various D.I.Y photography websites.Jeff Purser (producer of Cedar Boys) was kind enough to spend a weekend with me explaining how I should go about business and presenting myself as a professional. I recommend someone like Jeff, who knows the industry.

When did you get into the field of photography?I’ve been designing 3D art and general web/design for several years. I purchased my first camera in February 2009.I decided to quit my job as an IT Consultant and pursue photography in July 2009. I created a Facebook group explaining that I was looking for models to shoot for free and in return, they’d receive a free dvd of photos that I edit for them. This was great was to get exposure and learn the ropes at the same time. My name was quickly thrown around Facebook and networking groups in Canberra. Within about 3 months, people were contacting me asking how much I charged. I saw this as a great opportunity to take myself more seriously and start operating as a photography business. My facebook group can be found here:

Who has inspired your works?Dave Hill. Hands down! He’s amazing. He has literally branded his photography with such a defined style. All of his images tell a story and really pop out at you. Sam Lyons is another local bloke who really knocks the socks off anything urban. He’s great! Murat Sayginer is a great young talent. Tom Barnes does amazing band photography. Erik Johansson is known for his awesome “tripped out” work. These guys have all been a part of the process of molding my style in photography and retouching.

What are some of the programs used?I primarily use Photoshop for editing my photos. Lightroom is great for organizing photo collections ect. (Important program for clean workflow)Getting to know Photoshop is definitely a number 1 suggestion for any aspiring designer or photographer.

In general, during a session, how many pics would you say you take to find "the right one"?I usually take between 200-500 images, depending on the model and location. If a model is experienced and really knows how to pick the right pose, I’ll generally take fewer shots. Once again, It’s trial and error. Inspiration also plays a big part in the number of shots I take. If the model or location really inspires me, I tend to go a lil “clicky crazy” and shoot for hours. No one ever complains ;)

5 Tips to good photography.

1. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

2. When photographing models, try focusing on their eyes, then tilt the camera into frame. In photos and movies, eyes are always the number one thing that will connect the audience to your work.

3. I don’t like the word “research” so let’s call it “A Quest For Inspiration”. I always look at other peoples work for inspiration. It’s usually what gives me ideas for my future work. It’ll also feed your creativity.

4. Learn a couple of really cool editing techniques. The most important techniques that come to mind when editing photos are (in order of edit): dodge & burn, color enhancement (to suit mood of photo), sharpening. Many people overlook sharpening a photo. This can be the difference between a normal photo, or a photo that really pops out and grabs your attention.

Future aspirations? To see my photography on magazines and billboards and work with the coolest and most interesting people all over the world. To write, direct and soundtrack my own films.

Identified strengths, Identified weaknesses?Haha wow ok…

Strengths: Creative, strong communicator, passionate, decisive, fearless. I dictate my own reality and don’t let others persuade me.

Weaknesses: Can be unmotivated, nocturnal. I’m known to speak my mind. At times this can be bad :P

Tell us about your package (gear)? You wanna know about my package huh? Hehe.I started with a Canon 450D and still use it. I’m using a nice L series 25-105mm lense for most of my work. I use 2 Canon flashes which are both portable via wireless triggers. Usually mounted to 2 softboxes.Essentially, that’s all I use. Occasionally I’ll pull out my reflector for variation, but I just love working with flashes.

Projects been a part of:Writer/Producer/Cinematographer – Trop Fest (Short Film) - 2009 • Point Of View (Feature Film) – Sound Assist / Boom Operator / Photography Hand - 2009 • Ed Hardy Clothing – Photo shoot• From The Centre of Stonehenge (Music Video) – Stills Photographer – 2009 • COD (Feature Film) – Stills Photographer

Other hobbies and interests:

MUSIC. I’ve been producing my own music for about 4 years. Working on melodic hip-hop and soundtrack music. I’ve played the drums for about 11 years. Music can be found here http://www.speakermouthmusic.com/

5 words that describe your personality.Loud, fun, (apparently) funny, party animal, passionate, clown, over steps the mark :P

Awards/ Achievements

Insert sad face here :(I won the “Best film of the year” award in college if that counts?Awards aside, I’ve made many personal achievements in life in the last 2 years. Being able to know exactly what I want and then pursuing it is an achievement everyone should be proud of. Ask me this one again after I’ve made my first feature film ;)

Australia Media Preview Screening of "The Storm Warriors" - Movie Review

Date: Monday November 30
Time: 6.15pm for a 6.30pm screening
Venue: The Reel Room
Basement level State Theatre Building
49 Market Street
Sydney, NSW

Myself and Andy Minh Trieu saw ourselves invited to the Sydney preview screening of The Storm Warriors before its Hong Kong release on Dec 10. This was the press preview screening the Pang Brothers long-awaited and highly anticipated sequel to The Stormriders as presented on behalf of Vendetta Films and Cineasia.

I recall The Stormriders as one of my favorite feature films growing up during my teens (It was made in 1998, by the I was undergoing the traumas of my pubescence years from year 8 onwards). It was a film that introduced me to dreamy Aaron Kwok a.k.a ripped up “Storm” who was so fiery, rough and typically brute hot.

Storm Warriors… I wish I could lie but this film felt awkward. The sense of adventure feel disconnect and it was a CGI mish mash with inspirations evident from 300 and Sin City.

So this is how the story goes, a new baddie in town name Lord Godless (Simon Yam) and Wind (Ekin Cheng) and Cloud (Aaron Kwok) have to find short cut ways to up their powers to battle against the tyrant. One catch is faced by Wind, to defeat evil he must embrace evil.

What is certainly down quite catch is the two new “love” interests - two girls named Chu Chu (Yang Tang) and Second Dream (Charlene Choi). It just seems that their purpose in the film was to render useless and your typical damsels in distress that continually utter “Wind!” or, “Cloud!”. Charity’s role from Storm Riders was was engaging, why go so wrong in this department?

Overall, if you have seen the previous film, Storm Riders, this is a must. If you haven’t, don’t bother because its hard to follow the plot and easy to get lost in the array of experimental fight sequences.

About The Film: The Storm Warriors

In the summer of 1998, the comic-adapted movie The Stormriders ("Fung Wan I"), starring pop idols Aaron Kwok and Ekin Cheng, premiered to great regional success. The movie was in theatre for 45 days and topped the box office chart for the year at HK$41,532.235. In Mainland China, the unofficial box office number hit RMB 100 million.

The Storm Warriors will be China's biggest martial arts fantasy ("Wu Xia") film of 2009, with direction by The Pang Brothers - Danny and Oxide (The Eye, Kung Fu Hustle, Re-Cycle and the original The Storm Riders [Edited by Danny]).

Zack Snyder's 300 (2007) set the bar for the realisation of comic-inspired cinema, and The Storm Warriors is set to bring the massively popular "Fung Wan" franchise back with a bang. Produced extensively across three custom-created bluescreen soundstages (60,000ft), with sets and scenes expertly rendered in CGI, this highly anticipated sequel is screening to Australian fans on the same day & date as its Asian release - December 10.

About The Cast: Ekin Cheng & Aaron Kwok

The sequel to 1998's CGI smash-hitThe Storm Riders (based on the comic 'Fung Wan') sees Ekin Cheng and Aaron Kwok reprising their roles of WIND and CLOUD.

Kwok and Cheng are massive, multi-award winning Cantopop stars in Hong Kong/China, Taiwan, Singapore & Malaysia. Aaron Kwok joins Jackie Chan as the only actor to ever win 2 Golden Horse awards ("The Oscars of China/HK/Taiwan", very prestigious) for Best Actor, in addition to one at the Changchun Film Festival.

Cine Asia bring big screen, big budget Asian movies to Australian cinemas on the same day and date as they are released in Hong Kong and China. Supported by Australia's leading cinema chains (Event Cinemas, Greater Union, Village Cinemas and Birch Carrol & Coyle), fans of Asian cinema can now enjoy a consistent monthly stream of quality Asian movies, all in Chinese with English sub-titles.
Check out: www.cineasia.com

My Comment 1: I think its really awesome to see initiatives happen to connect Hong Kong Cinema in Australia. It just shows the growing interests in the film making realm and potentially this could lead to co-production natures in the nearest future.

My Comment 2: Don't be tight please my Asian fellows! Don't do what you are stereotypically notorious for, taking glee in ripping films off the net. Get out of your homes and go watch it on the big screens!

Mingling at the Inside Film Awards

Myself and Kung Fu film partner in crime Andy Minh Trieu attended the 11th Kodak Inside Film Awards ceremony last night (18 Nov).

We rocked on over at 6pm to a nicely laid out red carpet that directed us through to the entrance of Luna Park. We were greeted by the hospitality team and their professionalism (although I did note a number of thrills and spills of champagne by their newbie staff) and the seamlessly endless supply of alcohol, bottled water and Pomergrate juice (cute marketing of the bottle but horrible taste).

Catering was pretty good as well. Lots of finger foods and mini-chinese take away boxes of goodies.

But besides the minor irrelevant details, IF Awards is perhaps a must place to be for any filmmakers who ever want to make it mainstream. Forget about the cost, it is all worth it if you know the fine craft of mingling and efficient networking.

The general gist of IF Awards…in a nutshell they are the people’s choice award for Aussie films. This year it was held of Luna Park Sydney after 3 years up in the Gold Coast.

It’s a night in which it becomes possible for the audience to actually be in physical reach of the much beloved dinky di actors and filmmakers.

Past guests and presenters include: Nicole Kidman, Laurence Fishburne, Baz Luhrmann, Toni Collette, Geoffrey Rush, Cate Blanchett, Premier The Honorable Mr Bob Carr MP, Rose Byrne, Stephen Fry, Eric Bana, Claudia Karvan, Vince Colosimo, David Wenham, Kasey Chambers, Richard Roxburgh, Peta Wilson, Jacqueline McKenzie, Ray Winstone, Susie Porter, Tex Perkins, Emily Browning, Andrew Upton, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Bryan Brown, Sigrid Thornton, Malcolm McDowell, Simon Baker, Margaret Pomeranz & David Stratton. Previous hosts: Joel Edgerton, Libbi Gorr, Deborah Mailman, Sarah Wynter, John Safran and Julia Zemiro.

Who we met:

Natalie Bassingthwaighte
34, Australian actress, singer, author, TV personality and former lead vocalist for electro-pop band Rogue Traders.
I can remember her role as Izzy Hoyland on the soap opera Neighbours from 2003 to 2007, which gained her nominations for the TV Week Gold Logie.

Recently her debut album 1000 Stars debuted at number 1 on March 1, 2009.

Sam Worthington
33 year old, Perth born award-winning actor best known for his role as Marcus Wright in the 2009 film Terminator Salvation. He is set to play Jake Sully in Avatar and Perseus in the 2010 feature film remake of Clash of the Titans.

This guy is rocking in the film making world and Andy Minh Trieu (an action film buff) was thrilled to have caught him for the night.

Rowan MacNamara
I got the chance to meet Rowan MacNamara who makes his screen debut in Samson & Delilah. This film directed by Warrick Thorton took out 6 awards for the night and young Rowan was emotional when he received the Best Actor If Award category competing along side with Anthony LaPaglia “Balibo” and Hugo Weaving “Last Ride”.

Currently MacNamara lives in Hidden Valley on the outskirts of the Alice Springs township. Rowan is Eastern Arrente and is originally from Santa Teresa, an Aboriginal community 80km southeast of Alice. He is a keen AFL footballer, a devoted fan of Essendon Football Club and has travelled Australia playing footy with his school.

I can’t wait to tell the Koori kids on the Koori Youth Yarn Up digital storytelling project about this just in time for their own community launch on the 28 November at 1pm, Cranebrook Neighbourhood Centre.

Other people that was a good fun to meet:
The two Wilder brothers - potential action stars in the future.

Michael Winter, executive story consultant of Blue Heelers.

Liza Minnelli - Amongst my Idols

Date: 2 Nov 2009
Time: 8-9.30pm
Location: Sydney Entertainment Centre

“Liza Minnelli? Who’s that?” I enquired over the phone during my work break.

“She’s some big person. One of those people you must see before you die kind of thing” said Andy.

And that was how is was. I did my google search to find out that she looked like someone from the rocky horror show. Bob cut, thick lashes, wrinkly neckline. Probably in her 50s and still singing. I might have seen her a couple of ads recently and maybe a billboard or two, but who knows unless your over 50s right?

“ I got tickets to her show hun” Andy continued.

“So you in?”

Body combat or old lady drone? Hmmm….kicking butt is so tempting but spending some time with the man is no negoitation.

Fast tracked: In the City

6.00pm and I’m in the city and having teppanyaki with Andy.

7.00pm – we are at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, seat 15&16 and row 8 seating. The space started to fill up. We are talking about over 10,000 seating and there’s sheer excitement in the air. As I looked around, I begin to feel slightly uneasy; everyone else was predominately white, anglo and middle aged. TV host Kerry Anne was a couple of rows ahead of us. But, wow! We were definitely in one of the best seats section. A position that costs $280 p.p. (Ouch!).

Liza Minnelli was some sort of superstar, but unfortunately for me, I never knew. This iconic figure was like the equivalent to Jackie Chan, minus the stunts, except she can pull off some heavy hip movements for her cabaret style choreography – with all the shine and shimmering razzle dazzle.

Some songs I’m slightly familiar with, while the majority is new to me. But one thing for sure, she has sheer X factor glowing out of her. I was mesmerised, fixated on such a figure. Her genuineness, her optimism, her gratitude for her band, her pianist, her fans was evident. 3 times did the crowd gave her a standing ovation and she did several encores and belted it out from the bottom of her heart.

The power of one person that cause thousands of others to be touched by the emotions that she delved into such as love and empowerment was truly spectacular.

I sat there in the darkness, watching Liza on the massive screen and wondered about my own “Factor”.

I know its in there somewhere, waiting to come out and shine too. Right now its in study mode, watching, observing the world in delight, searching for more X factor kinds of people to rub off on.

Liza Minnelli X factor
1. Be comfortable with yourself. Whatever look, size, circumstances you are in, find your personal power and flaunt it.
2. Be honest. She was sure honest! When we was tire, out of breath, however she felt, she communicated it.
3. Be passionate about what you are doing.

LIZA MINNELLI, currently 63 years of age, is an American singer and actress of film, stage and television.

THE AUSTRALIAN: Liza Minnelli an 'old broad' worth grabbing

BEFORE THE EVENT: DINNER @ Chi Ban Japanese Teppan-Yaki BBQ Restaurant

Hot stuff! Look at the fire go! Beef, chicken, shrimp, fish...your all going into the fire!So quick, you can't see it!
