The Reel Deal - Directions & Dead Ends of Vietnamese Filmmaking

On the Saturday 31st of October, 2009, 7pm, up to 100 film buffs attended the Discussion Forum: Filmmaking in the Vietnamese Diaspora event held at the Powerhouse Youth Theatre and managed by Team Vietlish. The event was set up on the whim of the moment by Maria Tran & Joseph Hieu after their intense 10 days in LA, California.
I thought it was quite refreshing that the attendees were quite diverse, hearing about the event via word of mouth, facebook and even via the Kristine Sa Show which is based in the US.
7pm - we kick started off with the Vietnamese Storycubes exhibition in the main foyer. This project was run with 40 other elders earlier in the year that is based around the concept of storytelling and photo memories.
Joseph started to recruit 16 people to be a part of the "Directors" team; you were had a choice between Charlie Nguyen, Ham Tran, Victor Vu or Khoa Do.
The Vietnamese Stories Digital Storytelling Project was played on loop, featuring all the stories made by the young Vietnamese people in July, 2009. The stories were all very unique and varied according to personal choice, skills and experiences. We had stories about family struggles, personal triumphs, inner revelations, specific obsevations
